I'm new here, and I've searched if someone has already had this issue/idea, but found nothing, so:
Ksnapshot as a tool for taking screenshots during tasks like setting up or configuring software, for the purpose of documentation of the process, is plain unfriendly. The behaviour that it has now is based on the press of a button for taking the snapshot, and then pressing save or copy to clipboard the screanshot. Too many button presses... My idea is something more in line with Gadwin printscreen for windows. On this software you define the hot-key, and any time you press it it takes a screenshot and saves it automatically with an appended incremental number. You press the hot-key again, and it saves a new screenshot again on the same predefined folder. No popups, no confirmation screens, just plain unobtrusive screenshooting... If needed the new version can even provide a notification that the screenshot was taken... Right now ksnapshot and alternatives do not have this streamlined process wich makes taking screenshots in a row a pain... If already there is a solution, I'm eager to know it Thanks for the great job that is KDE 4.2.2!

I think this is a good idea, with a good suggestion to implement it. There is the CTRL + Print Screen shortcut to put an image to the clip-board, but that's even worse because you have to open up some other application to paste it.

This should at least be an option, it is rather frustrating to be taking screenshots of a virtual machine at work and discover that whatever I was trying to take a picture of is no longer on screen.

i like it ! now add drag and drop (drag from the tray icon to internet upload form and it puts the location of the file to upload into the form) and its perfect
how i'd assign key shortcuts if i had to choose printscreen - run ksnapshot in window mode (most intuitive for newbies) alt printscreen - take 1 snapshot and open a file save window. ksnapshot window is not shown and ksnapshot quits completely after the user saves the file shift printscreen - open ksnapshot in the mode suggested here and take a screenshot. if its allready running just take the next one alt shift printscreen - copy the screen to clipboard (most rarely used so has the most complex shortcut) |

ok. I just had this same problem recently and went about fixing it. Here's how I did it.
First create a text file with #!/bin/bash import -window root ~/Pictures/Screenshots/`date +%H-%M-%S-%N`.png and then name it "screenshot.sh" and sudo move it to /usr/bin/ Then go into configure desktop -> hotkeys and change Preset Actions -> PrintScreen -> Action to show "/usr/bin/screenshot.sh" instead of ksnapshot So, next time you hit the Print Screen button it will take a screenshot of the desktop and save it in ~/Pictures/Screenshots/ and use the hour-minute-second-nanosecond for the filename. |

That's not a fix. That's a completely alternative method. It does not solve the problem.

The problem as stated was "On this software you define the hot-key, and any time you press it it takes a screenshot and saves it automatically with an appended incremental number. You press the hot-key again, and it saves a new screenshot again on the same predefined folder. No popups, no confirmation screens, just plain unobtrusive screenshooting..." Adding these features to ksnapshot is of course a much better way to go, but my instructions are a successful, albeit hackish, way to accomplish the stated objectives. The brainstorm idea still stands though. Its just that there is a workaround in the meantime. |

Maybe it can be less obtrusive with the KDE 4.5 notifications? Just have a notification pop up after that has a thumbnail of it that expands when hovered over (or clicked) with a Save and Discard button right below it (and maybe an options button, to bring up stuff like time delays and such). I completely agree that the window is obtrusive, but I don't think getting rid of it entirely would be beneficial either. But to put it in the notifications would at least allow you to disable it from popping up as well.
