Today I was browsing my website with Dolphin, using the ftp kioslave. I had to clear out a number of folders, and found that loads of bandwidth was being consumed when all the images were fetched for a preview.

I would like to be able to tell Dolphin to not preview when using a certain protocol, like in this case ftp, but I would also like to be able to disable it for smb. IIRC, that used to be an option in Konqueror for KDE 3.5, but I am unsure.

I can, but it would be so much nicer if it could be done automagically, no? :)

I can confirm this option was present in KDE 3.
