Just an idea I got, or rather stole...someone's made a script to turn the Gnome desktop wallpaper into a twitter/identica.ca timeline.
Sounds like a great thing to have on a social networking activity...maybe add services like facebook, linkedin and what not as well. For my inspiration, check out http://nhandler.wordpress.com/2009/04/2 ... -walldent/

I don't see why you would want a wallpaper plugin for this instead of a widget.

Maybe just me that's a bit odd...but I think widgets are more in the way than wallpapers. No, not in the way. More like that the desktop feels cluttered and "busy" with widget(s) more than if the same info is a part of the wallpaper.
For me, widgets belong in a panel and on the dashboard.

What about a widget that can become a containment, like folderview?

That would work too, yes. Maybe even better actually, since it could then possibly be combined with whatever the user wants to use as the background (granted, personally I don't think anything but a blank background would make much sense with such a containment).

As far as I can tell, you can't even click on links in wallDent. Just that makes the current microblogging plasmoid superior in my opinion.
If you think it looks too cluttered, you can try a theme like Naked.

I agree with that. That the plasmoid is superior in some ways that is, and that the ability to use it as a backdrop is superior in other ways (and both are kinda handicapped that they, so far that is, are only for twitter and identica). Still, just because wallDent is limited in some ways is not a problem for KDE: it's a challenge to prove "we" can do better...some friendly competition never hurt anyone And if I was able to write code I would take on the challenge myself...
Actually, I have. I've tried several "tries to blend in with the desktop" themes (including naked and my current theme glassified), and yes: they do blend in better and makes the desktop feel less cluttered but those themes give me other problems instead. I have a _very_ bad eyesight, and some (read: many) plasmoids are very hard on my eyes when there's no background except the wallpaper. The microblogging one isn't _too_ bad (for bad, try the hard-disk system-monitor...it's next to impossible for me to read the temperature of my disks not to mention the free space remaining with a naked like theme), but it could definately be improved. For one thing: I think _every_ plasmoid should have the option of selecting which font and which font-color to use. Having a naked-like theme is great, for me, for plasmoids that either provides a lot of graphical cues (such as weather forecasts) or when it's text I've entered for myself (i.e. the notes plasmoid). It's not so great when there are no visual cues to what the information is about. Consider me strange if you will, but in my view technology should adapt to me: not the other way around.
