add a tall and short panel. set it to auto hide - thats where the magic is. you have nice spot with area to put plasmoids

lets place a folder view in there

Image

since its a panel the folderview appears in its compact mode

but how about full size plasmoids ? make it option in the plasmoids (so you can mix full size and compact in the same panel) or give another type of panel for that

Image

make option to detach this panel from screen edges (you move the mouse to the edge to unhide but then it opens where you did place it)

allow the panel to be taller (its in max height in img 1 and i edited it with paint in img 2)

If I understood the first idea correctly, it's already implemented; although not in the way you want it.

make option to detach this panel from screen edges (you move the mouse to the edge to unhide but then it opens where you did place it)

Didn't quite understand you there. You want to be able to detach panels from the screen edges? That would be a new idea -> separate thread.
Or do you want the panel to appear at the mouse's location if you move it to the screen edge? Again, that would be a new idea.

allow the panel to be taller (its in max height in img 1 and i edited it with paint in img 2)

I can already make my panels as tall as I want, as long as they fit on the screen. Or what do you mean by max height - can't you resize the panel?

I do believe he's talking about KDE stable, where us poorer folks have to put up with such restrictions...

I may be mistaken but I think he's referring to something I was thinking about. It would be nice to have the ability to place the full size folder view plasmoid in a panel and auto-hide. Items in the folder could then be readily accessed without clicking the compact mode icon.

I was also depressed to see this change between 4.2 unstable and 4.2 stable: with betas/RCs, I had one, large auto-hiding panel with Kicker shown. Then, it just turned into an icon I couldn't do anything with...

This gets my vote.

P.S. It did just occur to me that I'd like to see it the other way round, as well: the Now Playing and Notes plasmoids don't actually iconify in small panels, so I'd like this option as well (especially with notes).

Are you talking about the panel size? Because I don't see why there would be a max height.

About the main idea (full sized plasmoids on the panel), did you check my link? :-)
As said, it's already implemented, the plasmoids just have to make better use of it. Although this happens automatically; there's no option for it.
I don't know if it's implemented in 4.2 (the blog post was from last year I think), but it's easy to try it out: add the calculator plasmoid to a panel and resize it.

I do not see how Plasma can make this be controllable at any level except the Plasmoid itself. It is up to the Plasmoid to decide how it wants to be displayed depending on the containment it is in. I do not believe it is even possible since FolderView is likely a PopupApplet, which is controlled by libplasma.

@Hans link
yep thats the direction

@panel size
in the panel settings there is a spot you can drag labelled panel height

its not the arrows that set the length of the panel

if you drag it to the center of the screen there is a place where it won't go anymore

what i want can be implemented either as the sidebar or inside the plasmoids and use the standard panel
