with better and more streaming desktop switching (basically anything without keyboard or the '4 desktops' plasmoid / or the plasmoid with some cool effects enabled) we can expect users to go extensively using the multiple desktops feature

make option to configure automatic dynamic addition / remove of desktops on demand. kde sees a demand when the amount of applications on the current desktop reached a threshold that can be set. if its reached then windows of selected applications (or all windows except selected applications) open in new desktop and the user is switched to this desktop. this desktop is added to the amount of existing desktops

exceptions (windows blacklisted from this feature) by default are file managers etc - where its likely that the user wants to drag drop something between the new window and an existing one

or add feature to 'take windows of selected applications to new desktop' - in this case the existing file manager window is taken to the new desktop as well

desktops are closed when they become empty or when the amount of windows can be automaticall compacted to a smaller amount of desktops

Someone had a similar idea to make virtual desktops behave like tabs - you could add new tabs (virtual desktops) or close tabs as you wished. I can't find the thread at the moment, but I believe this was before the Brainstorm section was created.

While I think the idea is interesting, automatically creating virtual desktops sounds like a bad thing in my opinion. Some stuff you do need more windows, some less.

Yeah...need a good way to combine desktops on demand, virtual tabbed desktops, Enlightnment style window tabbing, Compiz style window grouping, GNOME shell, etc etc etc, all into one giant pot of yummy goodness.

I was just thinking about this...
I don't like the automatic part, especially the automatic closeure after it gets empty, this should be very optional.
But everything else is good.

I had similar idea, but I don't think Hans is reffering to it (I'll also try to find the one Hans is reffering to it, as I remember it)
here's my take on it: Folding and unfolding activities, but it only covers part of this idea or even better supliments it...

I don't like the automatic part of the idea (I don't want to be "warped" far from my previous working area, I want *control*), but still I think that something to add/remove dynamically virtual desktops could be really useful.
Maybe could be done adding something in the pager plasmoid...

One more thing that was in Compiz and loved is windows grouping, that could be really useful when using dynamic virtual desktops: I create a windows group, create a new dynamical desktop, and easily move all the windows in that group to the new desktop just dragging them on there.

bye bye
