Currently Phonon's ability to configure the backends is extremely limited. Phonon-xine only allows you to set the deinterlacing targets and algorithm. Phonon-gstreamer has no configuration options whatsoever. However, both backends have a lot of settings. For instance there is no easy way to configure surround sound settings, sound toolkit for the backend (like alsa, jack, etc), cache, and other options that the backends provide when you use them directly instead of through phonon. It really limits phonon's usefulness to not be able to configure the backends in an easy manner.
