There is an interesting use case here but I think some clarrification is required. You talk about "resolution" and then describe resolution in terms of pixel counts. This is a pervasive mistake but lets differentiate resolution (pixels per inch) from screen size (width x height).
A certain amount of automatic adjustment for pixel size is possible. The most common approach is to normalise for the physical size of rendered items. But what I think you want is the ability to have "terminal specific" settings rather than resolution specific setting. You just want to use screen size as the key? I think it might be better handled by allowing you to define a number of desktop profiles that you can switch between, and possibly associate with specific display devices. Currently it is possible to organise plasma differently on different activities. Perhaps your use case can be met by some evolution of the activity concept.

I've never used VNC so if this suggestion doesn't help I have no answer.
It sounds like what your want to do is apply scaling to the desktop on the display computer so that the entire server screen is displayed at a size appropriate for the display computer screen. The VNC website says that there is a scaling option in the VNC menu to allow you to do this. Hope that helps, otherwise I have no experience with VNC. |

a better solution to the changing resolution problem would be to put plasmoid size in % of screen instead of pixels like:
plasmoid size:400x300 resolution of screen: 800x600 plasmoid size(%)= 50% x, 50% y plasmoid position: 80,60 plasmoid position(%):10% x, 10% y I don't how easy it would be to implement this on plasma tough |

That is already mentioned in another idea: [Plasma/Activities] Plasmoids scale with screen size

This is really good idea. Is there any progress concerning this issue? I have simillar problem. I have a desktop PC with widescreen display - 1650x1080 or something like that - and then I have an old notebook used as a terminal connecting to desktop PC via XDMCP. This notebook has 1280x1024 resolution - it meas 4:3, not widescreen. While for widescreen I am using panel on left side with quite big icons as I have enough space on screen (it is 22'), for notebook I prefer panel on bottom side just with small quicklaunch to save as much space as possible. Currently I have two sets of .kde4/share/config/plasma* files and manualy replacing them before loging to KDE either from desktop PC or remotely from laptop. It would be fine if plasma supports this natively. I would also prefer to change font size but don't want to do it manually as well.
