Currently we have all settings in ~/.kde4 and logging in from different places uses same layout, plasmoids etc.
I have good PC, with 1920x1200 resolution, and I have additional laptop, and I have EeePC. I'm using them to remotely login to main PC and work there.
I couldn't work good with all this screens under same user, because layout for big screen is screwed when I logged in from small. (all plasmoids climb on each other)
My suggestion - add to kdm ability to create and choose different "profiles", simply with different settings directory.
Another users for remote login is not a good option, because I need to check file permissions every time I work with something which is not owner by me.
Simply rename some ~/.kde4-profileA to ~/.kde4 during login not best option too, because I could be happy to login from more than one place simultanously.

I hope you get the idea :)

I had more or less this problem and my solution was to create a couple of aliases calling xrandr with different parameters. It's not that automatic, but pretty fast and works on KDE3 :)
