In kword 2.0rc1 it seems that you can change the page characteristics only one by one or for the whole document. This, for complex documents where you need to automate as much formatting as possible, is problematic. A page style is needed, with all the characteristics of a “style”: followed by, linked with (I posted another idea about that...), etcetera. This way you can easily obtain complex layouts like a different first page for each chapter.
This can be configured on the “General layout” tab for the page style definition. Also, page breaks must allow the change of page style.

The development versions for 2.4 include the first steps for page styles. This can be considered "in progress", then
