[KMobileTools] Needs refreshing

Mon May 25, 2009 12:57 pm
Unfortunately, KDE4 now havent any good solution for managing mobile phones. There is KDE3.x KMobileTools but:
1) It is KDE3.x
2) It depends on KDE3.x libraries like aRts, which are absent on non-KDE3, modern distributions.
3) It uses very old versions of Gammu and isnt working with newer versions, which come with modern distributions.

I think that this piece of software should have some help from KDE developers to port it for KDE4, because everybody uses mobile phone, so software for managing it, is "must-have" for KDE.

Or isn't better to create a Akonadi resource for mobile phones?

1st. it wouldn't be only for KDE
2nd. Users could choose any Akonadi based tool for managing contacts, sms
3rd. You could merge conversations via sms, PM, email with the same person in one list.
4th. You could have 1 person - 1 address book entry. It is very annoying to manualy correct the same email in 3 or more address books :(

Lukas: It is very good idea, but has one downside - phone management isnt only synchronization of personal data, but also controlling phone, copying files, etc.

Having dolphin for files, and akonadi for personal data would be the best.

So by controling phone, what actions/features do you mean?
It think KMobileTools is unable to support such tools as language packs installation or firmware reinstalls etc. and I cant think of any other :(

Unless I miss something... ;)

Anyway, the best would be if such brands as nokia or SE would came and supprt open communities more, things could star moving much faster. Already Nokia supports QT developing, might be text step could be open drivers... :)

Yeah, but dolphin for files will work only for phones, which are discovered as USB stick on PC. Of course proper KIOSlaves (or whatever) for Dolphin could also resolve problem.

Sending SMSes or making calls from computer with connected mobile.

Yep, My SE internal memory is not accessible via USB stick mode. But KIOslave option could solve this once and for all :)

Why kontact or any other PIM client can't do that (sms)
Also there could be a kopete plugin, sice IM service and phone are doing basically the same

It would be great too, if you could merge conversations in one window with the same person even over different protocols like (sorting by protocol)

It would probably require several kio slaves. An obex kio slave for one, and probably other cell-phone specific ones.

This is the only thing for which I need Windows on my laptop.

Please give me a good tool for synchronizing contacts on mobile and backup of other data like sms and files.

Synchronizing contacts and other PIM data is already under development, and an obex kio slave is planned.

I think before working on a mobile managing solution itd be better if they allowed you to connect to internet via smartphone even though wired network is connected and not force you to go via your own network
