It can be really hard to debug kde apps sometimes, esp ones like kwin, plasma, and kscreensaver. things that basically run in the background. I'd like to see kde get some sort of logging facility, either something a simple as each 'daemon' app having it's own. or perhaps all could have one that simply goes to syslog or maybe kde could have its own logger daemon. I personally wouldn't mind syslog as long as it was easy enough to pick separate sources/destinations in powerful loggers like syslog-ng.
In theory this would/could make troubleshooting easier, as well as debugging. I would suggest not enabling it by default, and maybe have per app logging settings.

KDE does have a logging facility, called kdebug.
It works on "areas", basically numerical identifiers of libs and applications. See kdebugdialog for a GUI to enable/disable them. The config file kdebugrc can be used to fine tune this, e.g. which debug area is logged to which destination. See outputdebugstring- ... 46658.html and http://mail.kde.org/pipermail/kde-windo ... 03617.html Cheers, _
