Hey,

since KDE4 is starting to come along nicely it may be the time to have something Plasma desktop widget contest, to show even more the power of what the new desktop is able to.

The contest could start right after KDE4.3 is released and the winners would be included in KDE4.4.
Of course there should be different categories like Tools, Productivity, Eye Candy ..., also some like: Best improvement for an existing Widget, Best suggestion for a new widget (for user who have ideas, but can not write them) and also a jury by KDE devs and a vote by KDE users (may be by using KDE-Apps).

Why not, it is not forever? Their have been a lot of contests around in KDE-Community. Mostly for Artwork, but KDE itself already has the Akademy Awards and also proudly presents the awards KDE and its apps have received. The idea of the contest would be to animate people to write new ones, to promote KDE and the plasma desktop itself. So that one the one side people who may have thought to write one, but did not know when to start, have a small kick. Then such a contest would also would reach people who have not heard yet of KDE, the power of the new desktop and who then try it or even take part in the competition.
I have just recently switched to KDE4, it took me a while. I was always looking forward to it, but until now the regression and the lack of stability did not convince me and I think a lot of people did the same. Now I am happy Beta-tester (still crashes, but no data loss so far and I believe as many that now KDE 4.3 can be adopted by the masses. These masses need motivation and an increasing number of creative uses of the new desktop, could help to achieve that.
