AFAIK there isnt any MAME (or any other emulator) frontend for KDE4 at the moment. Gaming is important thing for many computer users, and making good frontend for MAME (or SNES, or UAE, or any other emulator) would give KDE users access to thousends of good gaming titles.

I am not sure KDE can really risk getting directly involved in emulation. It is currently a legal gray area with conflicting laws, court cases, and patents. Kxmame and other KDE emulator project were, I believe, third-party projects.

I dont think that there would be any legal issues, regarding even not emulator - but an emulator frontend. If Kxmame could be illegal because people can play pirated roms with it, Amarok could be also illegal because some people play pirated mp3's with it, and SMPlayer could be illegal because some people play pirated movies.
There are perfectly legal roms which could be downloaded from internet and played in MAME, also many can be bought on ebay. And look on the benefits - 8000 games, from which most are simply more playable than games provided by KDE. |

First, Amarok does not require the reverse-engineering of any hardware, which is legally dubious in and of itself. Second, there are very few legal roms, it is primarily used to play illegal games. For media players, however, it is both easy and common to use legally-owned music. Also, I doubt having an emulator front-end would be an effective defense, since the front-end is of no use without the emulator. Finally, it would amount to official KDE endorsement of software piracy, something I would prefer KDE avoid.
That is not to say I think this is a bad idea, but I do not think it should be an official part of KDE. I think it should remain a third-party project.
