Dolphin should have possiblity (maybe some plugin) to convert media formats. It should work both with audio and video, and support all file formats supported by mencoder, and maybe also office documents (wv2?).

Perl Audio Converter includes Dolphin service menus that allow you to do that for sound files when you right-click on one.
Edit: fixed mistake about being able to convert videos.

fyi - pacpl (perl audio converter) is an amazing tool though it only does audio (I believe) but I do have a small service menu that does some video conversion (and of course have no idea where it came from)

I don't like this idea, because you want Dolphin make actions that are not concerning with it's nature of file manager.
Moreover file encoding may require many parameters...

I disagree. The whole point of having the "actions" menu in the right-click menu is so you can do a variety of tasks like this beyond ordinary file browsing, both general and file-type specific. One of the great things about Dolphin/Konqueror is its servicemenus, which makes it easy for programs to add new actions.

but this way you will have a kilometric right-click menu with a great number of actions that the 99% of users will never use.
I suppose it's coming the moment to give to the user the ability to choose what action he wants in his Dolphin menu. I would appreciate an action to verify/create a md5sum/sha1 hash from a file...

Putting everything under service menu is not the best idea, since, as you said, it will became kilometric.
Better way could be either: * Put all advanced actions under 'Advanced' submeniu entry * Like in office hide never used actions/show actions users uses most * make more use of drag&drop (especially when moving media to media devices) - We can add more actions below like -Move Here -Copy here -Make shortcut -Convert to [most recent used/default target format] -Converting options 1st is the easiest to implement, but last two is the most advanced, and conversion on the fly could be one of the key features against any other DE's |

First, it wouldn't make the right-click menu any longer, only the actions sub-menu. Second, it would only make the actions sub-menu larger by at most one entry.
A question: what is the actions sub-menu for, if not for things like this?

Might be its because longer and longer, more and more laggy menus was the key part of windows.
In deed generally even noticed, that things are added to actions sub-menu Shame on me. Somehow actions sub-menu is not well enough organized. I can't tell how to make better now, bust something is not right Anyway, most recent actions used could be moved to the main menu What about drag&drop ? |
