I was thinking, how to could KDE get more attractive to more users, and then I thought about public computers in libraries, info centers and so on. One of ideas was: Why they cant "earn" money for their keeping expenses?
Adds is most popular way for getting money in the internet. Why adds cant be shown while nobody are using them instead of some random vector screensaver? Of course we could use this as play music videos or something, but the idea about adds was the source of everything The easiest and most simple solution could be a video player screensaver with options like
As you see, in this way screensaver could be able by himself to start/stop streaming video, shuffle playlist, select video and so on, if necessary. Another way could be ability to use simple activity with video player plasmoid as screensaver with options to run action at start stop. Add a "screensaver flag" to that activity to filter it out from regular loop of activities, and access it only in zoom out interface. Not mixing where it doesn't belong, yet easy to find and configure. |

A video stream as a screensaver might be an idea worth implementing. But using it to serve ads? You should separate those two ideas to see what people want/ do not want. Markum

About serving, might be its my fault about telling truth, but I wanted to tell how this idea came - I have never seen any linux based public PC in my area. And ability to easily serve adds could be one of the ways to persuade local politicians to take a look at open source - Getting money if betters than spending money for basically the same thing
Now lets just forget about adds, other ways to use this: At same public PC's and homes: * Show local forecast channel - Distribute important news * Show top news via RSS (if done in activity way) - Attract peoples attention and let them find thing instantly * Show "Time Warp" clips (from discovery channel) - one of the best * Play Videos even from NAS or any other external media - We can attach command to mount/unmout them * Show view form cameras - your children in one room, you see it form another * Use as a mirror - attach a webcam * Any other idea, you might think it is interesting Just forget about money, money don't rule the word, People who owns money rules the world |

take a look at :
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wzsZeiy4_4M I tried the now playing plasmoid which did nothing of the kind as shown on this clip But also there is a widget called previewer Goto System settings Desktop then screen saver the last option on screensaver is allow widgets to run tick this then goto setup add previewer and then right click open a film It is buggy sure.. It does what you ask kind of yep In theory this sort of thing in future will be quite easy considering the capabilities of adding widgets to screen saver.. |

Interesting solution
But previewer is not ideal since it don't itself start video on screensaver start. |

This is such a simple idea, one I've wanted as long as I knew what a screensaver was, I'm surprised Windows and MacOS don't provide it.
Its also good for pranks
