[kget] Collaborative downloading

Mon Jun 15, 2009 5:08 am
Hi,
I think it would useful if kget would allow collaborative downloading. What I mean by that is that you can split a download into a number of equal sized parts and download just ONE part. You can then download another part from another computer. Then finally after all the parts have been downloaded you can merge them together to get the original download.

For example say you and your friends want to download a large file (eg a game or a dvd iso). You split up the download into 5 parts and you and four of your friends each download a part. Then after everyone has downloaded their own part, you all get together and merge your parts. This will result in a download which is 5 times faster.

I haven't come across any download manager yet which allows this functionality and I think it will be a useful feature to have.

You would have to physically get together and then transfer all the parts onto a single computer using USB drives etc or by LAN. Then you could merge them together.

It would also make sense that if you have a computer at home and one at work then each could download one part and you can transfer the part downloaded at work by using a USB drive.

Well for lan situation, p2p could solve this.

As for usb, there could be a some sort of USB2peer app, so you force app to download only some part of files, them move them to usb and launch USB2peer. Then everything goes like in regular p2p
