I'd like to propose an idea for a tide clock widget, for those of us that live close to the beach.
I've spent the last couple of days dreaming up ideas for a mock-up because I have very poor coding skills, but I found out today that there's a program out there already that does a fine job of what I was looking for. It's called XTide, and it's licensed under the GPL. The clock mode (I think) does a pretty good job of presenting the current tide info, including sunrise/sunset and the next high/low tide. It also updates automatically every minute! Here's a screenshot of it in action: The website documents the program quite well, as there are a few quirks to getting it to run. My sincere hope is that someone out there has the knowledge, know-how, and desire to wrap this program in widgety goodness. Even if it can't be simply wrapped in a nice little widget box, XTide could probably be used as a behind-the-scenes data source for a customizable tide clock widget. |
