Hi
I'm a long time KWrite user and it's also my default editor where I spend a lot of time coding in it. It's a lightweight, simple and fast editor but the only thing I'm missing is tabs support. I often deal with multiple files (sometimes up to 20 at a time) and the fact that KWrite doesn't support tabs makes it very difficult and annoying for me to work with it when dealing with a lot of files at a time so I would like to request tab support to be added to KWrite/Kate as soon as possible Thanks |

You want to use Kate then. Multi-document editor with many useful plugins.

Yes, I could but I do not really like Kate. Even when KWrite and Kate share a lot, I prefer to use KWrite. What I would like to see in KWrite is the "Kate Tab Bar Extension Plugin" implemented in KWrite so that I can have tabs at the top of it, similar to Firefox |

you can try to remove stuff from kate to leave just the tab bar

yes please!
It would be great to have tabs in Kwrite, it would allow to have it all in one window for html, css, js, php, xml and almost anything we may want to edit with an application working out of the box. |

You can group windows if that makes it easier... which means that you get tabs on top, more akin to Google Chrome. That way you can have tabs that aren't just KWrite, but KSpread and such as well.
The only thing I wish they would do was make it easier to group windows more easily, or have things like KWrite default to opening in a new tab of a group instead of opening a new window that you have to go and group later. |

+1 to the envalin's suggestion to just use the window tab groups - no change necessary for KWrite, just the application-specific KWin setting that all KWrite instances (on the same desktop+activity) be grouped in the same window tab group.
Kwrite is intended to be the simple-and-light, basic text editor and Kate is intended to be the extensible, full-powered editor. Let's not blur the line because we want some feature already available in Kate in the lighter editor.

Actually, in general, I wish that KDE applications would get rid of tabs within the program, including Dolphin, Kate, Konqueror, etc., and just stick with the tabs on top now that it's an option. Having a tab that has tabs in it is a little scary =O
Edit: I've posted my own idea about tabs in general. It is posted here: brainstorm.php#idea92679_page1 |
