first of all i'd like to admit that i use windows at work ( i have to ) and that i use directory opus to navigate my files and directories. that's where i pull the most ideas from
i'd like to have a line edit to popup (similar to the filter bar) as soon as i start typing to find a directory. i know you can switch to the location bar with ctrl+L, but you need to hit this shortcut, then you have to hit the End button to deselect the current path and then you can start typing beginning with a slash '/'. my proposal is something like this keyboard navigation as you can see it is way more powerful than what we have right now.

Could be a good idea.
In the same time navigation using key arrows could be ameliorate, such as proposed in bug 160024, "treeview navigation windows like" : https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=160024 (Note that the desired behaviour was the behaviour under KDE 3.x. KDE4 brings a regression here) |

definitely not the way it is suggested here (if I get it right). When I start typing I expect it to do inline search within directory currently active, with automatic focus move, just the way it works now. what is missing a little is selection of the searched pattern in the focused entry.
Anyway dolphin is not suited for working with keyboard at the moment, I really hope it is going to change with time. 1. focus for the list-button(sorry, I am not aware of its proper name, right mouse button replacement) does not follow cursor navigation 2. left arrow does not work for plastique and oxygen styles (it is really a global problem, not only dolphin related) 3. right arrow can move focus to another property columns (size, date, etc.), I do not believe it is the intent. 4. underscore shortcuts do not move focus to `places' (alt+p for this one) and alike panels. and the rest is rather a wishlist... 5. no quick selection keys, something like search but, not opening results in a new panel, but making selection instead. and ctrl++ could for example select all files with same extension as current, and so on... 6. no shortcuts defined for operations in two-panel view (swap panels, open the same folder in passive panel, copy to passive panel, move to passive panel, and so on), it does not hurt at all introducing those, but can be veeery powerful. also keyboard navigation between panels is not there. 7. working with archives is terrible, mc does much better job at the moment, and conqueror did in the past as well. 8. no tools to work with extended attributes (tags and nepomuk is a totally different story) and that is just what jumps to my mind....
