Maximumize is an option to maximize the dimensions of a window without covering other visible windows. Basically, the window increases in size in each direction until it hits another window or the edge of the screen. It makes it easier to fill the screen with windows that should all be shown together without having to manually resize them all.

A Kwin implementation of this feature would be great, especially if it is included as one of the optional window buttons along with maximize, minimize, etc.

Please look at the following blog and see if the tiling work will satisfy your idea. If not, we will approve it:

I'm having trouble conceptualizing some of the aspects of the KWin tiling project, so I'm going to try to make a guess at why my suggestion is not redundant by providing a usage case that doesn't appear to be covered by tiling.

When I open GIMP, usually I get sidebar windows on the left and right and a small window in the middle with the canvas. I want the canvas to fill all the unused space.

Normally, I need to move the window to the top of the screen next to the left sidebar window, stretch it to the right until it hits the right sidebar window, and stretch it down until it hits the taskbar.

With Maximumize, I would press my keyboard shortcut while the canvas window is active, and it would just fill all that space. A KWin implementation could have the option to stick a button on the window itself to do this.

I don't think tiling would help in this situation because it appears to depend on layouts. If I understand it correctly, I would need to configure a layout that knows what size the sidebar windows and canvas windows need to be relative to each other. If that is correct, then I think my idea is a more straightforward and dynamic.

I would be happy to try to figure out how to get KWin tiling working on my computer if my argument is unclear or invalid.

wow, this looks awesome, and is indeed one of the features i miss in kwin. when will this be available? is it ready for kde 4.4? it would be really great if you could switch tiling on/off seperately for each workspace or activity...

I think it is ready in some form now, which means it will be in 4.4.
