Muting should be faster accessible. Since double-click on kmix in the systray has no function, yet, this would be an option.

Clicking on the KMix icon has the result of opening the master mixer which has a "Mute" checkbox on it. I fail to see how this is not easily accessible.
You can also set a default shortcut also, which would make it even faster.

How would this be discoverable by the user? |

Can't you already do this by middleclicking it?

I would expect the double-click to open a window with all the volume controls.
I'd expect any application to open a window on a double-click command. |

Middle click does it, so I don't think double click needs to.

Thank you for your comments. The double-click for muting is the Gnome-way, that's why I thought about it. I didn't know that middle click is doing the trick and I also agree with renrutal after thinking about it - yes, I'd also expect the detailed mixer on a double-click.

Maybe to have in addition to middle-click double right click?

As a laptop user, I don't have a middle button to click, interesting...

On a laptop you have a dedeicated mute button, on desktops, you have middle clicking the kmix.
(if you dont have a mute button, get a better laptop.) |

It was much better if double clicking opened the kmix window. Currently you have to click on the speaker icon, wait for the volume slider to appear, move your mouse to “Mixer” and click.
