Hi,

I couldn't find this idea here so I hope it is new. I use Kmail with a POP server. It is possible to leave the downloaded messages on the server. This is very usefull to keep copys of important mails.

But since at least 50% of mails today are **** it would be usefull to have the possibility to delete messages from the server automatically when they are moved to trash in Kmail. This can save a lot of space on the server.

So deleting messages after a specific time or when reaching a specified limit doesn't solve your problem?

Apart from that, i think this is more something that is done with imap, not sure, but i think POP isn't supposed to do this.

No. This would delete any message after a specific time/limit. What I suggest is deleting messages which are probably unimportant because the user deleted it locally, too. So you have automatically a server backup of your essential mails only.

Yes, this is an IMAP feature, too. But in fact I know lots of providers which do not support it and lots of users which do not use it because IMAP doesn't work well for them. So this would be a good combination of simple POP and an important IMAP advantage.

I have read that Thunderbird has this feature already. But I had no possibility to check that for now.

Mozilla mail and its descendants (maybe even Netscape, but I couldn't swear to that) have always offered this, and I've always been curious as to just what they are doing. As has already been said, it is not supported in pop mail, therefore mozilla etc must be doing something non-standard, like adding a tag that fools the host into thinking it hasn't been downloaded yet. I'd love to know exactly what they do.
