So far, you can only select files from one folder at a time.
However I often intend to copy/move/delete/whatever more than one files from a complex directory tree structure at once. Also files that reside in differrent subfolders. I do not want to copy the whole subdir! I do not want to copy them in several steps. I want to select these files that reside in several subdirs in one step and copy them in one job. (this combined to the Advanced Copy Function 'Copy With Path' makes it very easy to selectively copy path/file structures to other disks, external media, players etc. e.g.) Dolphin should have a simple checkbox on top/bottom/side/whereever of a shown directory that, if clicked 'on', shows the files of the current directory, and a selectable depth of subdirectories and all files in that subdirectories completely flat as they were in one directory. (some foto-managers have that feature but it makes sense to general filemanagers also) |

I would need this kind function almost everyday. I think it could be done just by extendending the great + icon what got added by KDE4. Just keep storing the selection when user change directories by opening folders, pressing back/forward buttons or moving with breadcrum.
The basket application has similar to this function already. Very nice software what I would like to see extended to the filemanagement system on KDE. Mayby someone could write a sidepanel plugin what would show files what are dropped (tagged) and then you could paste/cut/delete or do something for the tagged files as they would be on one directory. |

a related idea could be to have a kind of "dropbox" plasmoid. So you select yours files in a directory then drag your selection on the plasmoid. The plasmoid show a list of available "selection groups" or you can create a new one.
Repeat this step for all your file that are located in different folders. In the end,you simply select your new group in the plasmoid (which contains "links" to all the files you dropped on it) and drag-it in the final destination. This is great because you don't have to open a bunch of window to copy/move files from differents sources. Maybe I should do a mockup and put a new idea here...

I remember fairly there was that kind application for KDE3. But that really should be on the panel if it is made for plasma. Then it could be used from save/open dialogs as well when they do not need anything else.

On the panel : just show an icon and display the "selection groups" list in a dropdown list
On the desktop : display the "selection groups" list directly. A sidebar plugin for Dolphin and Konqueror would be great too but in this case, you can't use this feature when managing files with gwenview or amarok for example

Why not use expandable folders?

"And what about this wish:
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=200461" This is roughly what I described in my previous post and indeed, I think this is a great idea

That wish is more like what the tags are for. You can tag files and then place the tag to the sidepanel or any other place where you just can get a path. I use that a low to mark some files what I want to get from sidepanel.
But it is still a slowdown for faster cut/paste functions because you need to first tag all. But for job functions it is create because you can use open/save dialoge itself to give the metadata itself. |
