I use Meta + R too :) But Alt + SPACE would be a better default than Alt+ F2 IMHO.

It would be nice to at least have ability to assign alternative shortcut to the current one ALT + F2
Currently you can only replace ALT + F2 but you can't have 2 shortcuts that do the same thing ??

PS.
It is probably possible to do this in System Settings-> Input Actions but it is totally not intuitive :S

Changing defaults is always a tricky thing. Most *nix DEs have Alt+F2 as the default shortcut for the 'Run...' command.

Replacing it would be a very dangerous move. Introducing an alternative shortcut could be viable a solution.

Even though I did change the hotkey to ctrl+spacebar, I don't think changing default is the best idea.
As was said before every DE and even every WM (well I can only speak for Fluxbox) have alt+F2 for run command.
But adding secondary hotkey isn't that bad. Also those of us that want to change can still change in system settings.

That would require support for multiple global shortcuts, which isn't currently possible.

Yes, yes. This is something really necessary. Krunner has become much more than a run-command. It is by functionality something much more important and could replace Kmenu. In fact it does for me. But therefor it needs to be easier to access and to memorise also for new users. Since KDE4 has turned stable I have started installed Linux again on friends computers :-) One of the first thing I change is the stupid short cut for Krunner.
If ALT-F2 is a Linux standard for "run command", why not separate this again? Alt-F2 only running commands as it was and ALT-Space for more? This would need to allow Krunner to run with more than one instance. You could then have individually configured Krunners with different functionality being activated by different short cuts.

There is a wish for that here:
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=211409

BTW: I have filled a wish for changing the shortcut some time ago in bugs.kde.org -> http://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=181084 At the moment it is set on wontfix, because nobody else commented on it.

like IvanC says alt+f2 must stay, but in alternative another pr??ctic shortcut, maybe the Meta(win) key alone(when its release whiout another key pressing?).

In my view all global shortcuts should be with meta key. additionally alt+space is a standard combination for window menu (that thing in the left upper corner of each window), for example in xfce and windows.
It would be nice to have different shortcuts themas in general, if there would be a theme with all global shortcuts on meta key I would comply and switch to that from what I currently use.
btw for krunner I use meta+r.

launchy got that alt+spacebar from katapult, didn't it? ;)

I like having the application runner easily acessible, so it's strg+space for me.

KRunner could automatically detect what shortcut to use: "We have detected that you pressed Ctrl+Space five times in a row, more forcefully each time, before pressing Alt+F2 to launch KRunner. Do you want to change KRunner's shortcut to Ctrl+Space?"

KDE should not ask why I'm doing something out of the blue unless I asked it to do so. It gets in the way.

Do not try this at home, part 1. Second most favorite command after KDE upgrade: # chmod -x /usr/bin/kactivitymanagerd

I like keeping a default setup so there's minimum fuss reconfiguring everytime I reinstall. Despite this I change that bizzare alt+f2 to alt+space instantly on every machine I use.

Alt+space is the fastest, easiest to remember combo purely by the fact that it is the largest key on the keyboard and the key next to it. Ctrl or Meta + space would still be a huge improvement though.

I do wonder if this idea has gotten voted down more than it should by having people who would like ctrl or meta used vote against it.

Anyway, two very big thumbs up from me!

for things like keyboard shortcuts which people learn and remember, it is. and for the same reason screwing with the layout in system settings every release is verboten.

anyways, i see no less than four suggestions: alt space, ctrl space, meta space, meta 'r'.

we can have 2 without it becoming utterly silly. alt+f2 is staying for legacy reasons, at least for now (maybe we can get rid of it later on if people get "weened" onto a new combo).

personally, i don't care what the alternate would be, so ... start a survey somewhere, we'll get the word out about it, and people can vote for which one they are most likely to use and we can go from there.

I definitely vote for alt+spacebar, it goes from KDE3 Katapult and is more convenient (I think) than ALT+F2. I see the logic of going for ALT+F2 but hope ALT+spacebar can be added as "second default".

Have also changed myself, one of the first things I did after going KDE4

ah, something to keep in mind while sorting this out: some IDEs using -spacebar for autocomplete and some multibyte input panels use -spacebar to activate as well... a survey of those uses should also be made.
