I'm almost sure this idea will not get any votes from linux-only users, but I'll post it anyways :)

A lot of (power)users on windows use the program "launchy" which resembles krunner a lot, and it has the really handy shortcut ALT+SPACEBAR, which is much more convenient to use than ALT+F2. So the idea is to change the default shortcut so it is consistent with launchy. Try it, and you will like it more!
To use ALT+F2, I have to stretch my left hand and get my fingers off of the "fdsq" keys to press the F2 key. The alt key I can easily do with my left thumb. So when using ALT+SPACEBAR, I can leave my fingers on the "fdsq" keys, and do the shortcut with my two thumbs, and immediately start typing.

I actually have done this by going into the settings and modifying krunner keyboard shortcut. (actually I use CTRL+SHIFT+SPACEBAR)

IIRC, the old Katapult (for KDE3) had this shortcut. I'm not sure why the devs didn't adopt it for KLauncher.

Yes, I did that too, so it's not a real problem, I admit. It's interesting to note that you also changed it so that you don't need to go all the way up your keyboard with your fingers.

Actually, Launchy isn't a "Windows program". It's available for Linux too. And Linux also has Gnome-do which is somewhat similar and uses Super+Space by default.

I use Gnome-do in Gnome so I set the shortcut to Super+Space.

I personally set it to meta space myself. I usually use meta for those sorts of general system shortcuts.

now my two cents to the perfect shortcut:

ctrl + space !!!

ctrl has the perfect distance to space so tiny finger and thumb can hit the krunner and ctrl is on the outer left side of the keyboard so its always a 100% hit..

So now this leads to the problem of which to pick as a default. Although any of the three would be better than the current one.

I would prefer ALT more because the previous shortcut also used ALT + it's consistent with launchy.
Thanks for the votes everyone!

I use Meta+R to stay consistent with windows. Besides its origin in Windows it really makes sense and its quite easy to press. Try it!

Why would anyone want to change the defaults, which are used for x years, when you can so easily change the shortcut in system settings?

I don't think "because we've always done it that way" is a good reason for anything.

I'm using Meta+R too. I don't think alt + something is a good global hotkey. And ctrl + something is usually apllication specific. So I'm using meta.

Do not try this at home, part 1. Second most favorite command after KDE upgrade: # chmod -x /usr/bin/kactivitymanagerd
