I think it's best to have it themeable. You can have the graphics as a single SVG, with the appropriate IDs, abstracting the visuals from the functionality. You could then switch to a different SVG for a new look. I've seen some plasmoids with UIs that are based on this concept (although they don't offer a way to switch to a different look, you'd have to overwrite the SVGs yourself), like the weather station plasmoid. It's the seven-segment display paradigm.
