This seems like two separate ideas to me:
1) Use KNotify instead of KOSD. 2) Configure KNotify to show/not show messages when you have an application in fullscreen mode. Please clarify which idea you want users to vote on. Also, not everyone knows what KOSD or KNotify is - it would be good if you could explain what the difference is (for example with screenshots).

In the design point there could be learned something from Ayatana as pure text is annoying and ugly.

can you explain why? What's the problem with the current solution?

Current solution is somewhat inconsistent.
Having i graphical progress bar with (speaker) icon would be superb! I would also like to see this when changing brightness, currently there is no notification for it. |

I don't like kosd because it appears right in the middle of the screen. It's unpleasant if you are watching a movie.
And I think it would be nice to use everywhere the same technology. One technology to show messages, this should be enough. |

Are you sure this is KOSD? I don't seem to have it installed, yet I see the same OSD popping up. Also, KOSD looks very different here
I know that's not the point you are trying to make. I understand the "consistency" argument. However, I think that the volume control indicator should be clearly visible and readable, covering significant portion of the screen. You can't rely on your ears when adjusting the volume, since you might be in a situation where the source volume is temporarily low. I would prefer something similar to the mplayer OSD, though a bit more polished, with some transparency to be easy on the eyes (worth putting as a separate idea). |

Notifications are clearly visible and readable as well. When adjusting volume you could take a look at the notification. But therefore the notifications doesn't have to be centered and cover significant portion of the screen.

I was merely referring to the mock-up provided, with the text indicator. You made a similar point earlier. The Ayatana design is not bad and yes, it doesn't have to be centred, although I prefer it. Especially when watching a movie, being on the bottom of the screen and centred, allows me to see it yet continue watching the movie. It's probably because our eyes are used to reading subtitles in a similar fashion. Having it on one of the corners of the screen and small in size, means that it requires my full attention to see its status. This is especially true when using a projector. From a technical point of view, I agree that it's better to have one system to cover notifications (although volume control and brightness indicators are not notifications per se). I'm voting this up as a good idea for handling these in a consistent way, with a common theme, but I'd like to see an option (if not default) to have 'indicators' to be bottom-centred. Just to put things into perspective, here is a mockup of the kind of indicators I'd like to see (under two conditions, desktop and movie): |

Ioannis you are right it isn't kosd just osd. I confused them.
Your mockup looks very nice. But it's important no know that for KDE 4.4 they designed yet a new osd. Look at: http://techbase.kde.org/Schedules/KDE4/ ... multimedia Would be interesting how it looks now. |

The "new" OSD it is just an extension of the current version (sorry, no Plasma look or nicer UI yet...) which includes an icon to show the current muted state (and that icon also adjusts to the current volume label (as the systray icon))
It is on my plans to investigate if Plasma notifications can support some kind of OSD with a progress/meter bar on it. Regards |

Thanks for the update/clarification. So, do you know if KDE has some sort of 'annotation'/OSD-like API? I know Compiz has a plugin for that sort of thing, but that becomes window/compositor manager dependent, which isn't particularly good. I've actually placed the question here earlier. |

KDE does not have an OSD API at this point, but creating one isn't too hard. Dolphin and System Settings share a tooltip class that works in a similar manner ( although you probably want to use Plasma classes for a OSD )

I agree, it is obnoxious to have a big black and blue bar pop up over a video when i'm trying to adjust volume for a badly mixed up-and-down volume video, of which there are tons.
