Yes, I know this has come up before, and here it is again because I've never seen any explanation of why this is not possible that has answered my questions.
I still don't understand why the desktop cashew has no auto-hide option, but my proposal would be to allow it to slide off screen in a similar method to the panels. The only actual difficulties I can think with this is that the cashew can go in a corner while panels cannot (so the 'glow' when getting near it would need to be more flexible to accommodate this, and the cashew would have to be able to slide in diagonally), and that a blue glow could make it easy to confuse with panels (I was struck with the idea of using a red glow by default for the cashew to signify a difference, but other suggestions are welcome). However, I really don't see any insurmountable problems with this. There are some situations in which the desktop cashew may be required to always be visible, and I can respect that. But there are other situations (like my desktop) where it would clearly be better for the desktop cashew to not be visible under most circumstances. I can think of no technical or design reason to completely forbid this option, so I'm asking yet again in the hope that progress can be made towards a solution that can satisfy everyone.
