new object TaskbarWindow

Thu Mar 04, 2010 3:56 am
I was seeing the firefox plugin to show mini previews for each tab, and it has individual buttons for ones...

Is it possible to do it in plasma-desktop?

i.e., when applications starts, it draws the main window, can draw a notify icon, and then can draw a plasma-window that appears replaceing the window-previews in plasma-desktop`s task manager applet.

ADVANTAGES:
- can draw the normal preview (if the windows doesnt draw nothing, the taskbutton creates automatically a generic, with the window title, icon, preview (provided by the window manager) and a close button (this replaces my old idea: brainstorm.php#idea82607))
- can manage common comands easily:
- amarok/xmms: has the play/pause/next...buttons, volume scroll and a video plugin out instead window preview
- kaffeine/smplayer: shows JUST the video playing, dont show full window`s preview
- kopete/kmess main window: as I cant see contact list from previes, its not necessary to view it. just show the avatar, text box to change name and message, and a combo to change status
- easy to manage, ie, windows in another desktop, or minimized, or behind many windows, and you just want to do one click.

FAILS:
- kwin highlight effects? i dont know if it can work.

(Note: I dont know english, just from videogame, web forums and primary school!)

Smooth task (http://kde-look.org/content/show.php/Sm ... ent=101586) gives a partially solution for your problem. Maybe try to contact the author?

the idea is that a developer can create the tooltip layout into the program code, independent from the task-manager plasmoid.
then it can or can't show the preview, if the application needs it.

like creating a plasmoid, but into the program, and it appears only on mouse hover the application button in taskbar, and hides on mouse left it.

I think this would be a good idea but I think the API for this should be put this in a library, to make it standard.

and I don't see how this would break highlight window...

I think, that better is group two window. Example, we can create window with SMALL_WINDOW X tag(atom). This small window won't be displayed on taskbar, but connected to each non SMALL_WINDOW.

On each element in taskbar of application(window) containing small window, we can display a little arrow. This arrow will show/hide small window connecting to application.

Normal WM/taskbars would show small window normally.

I don't know if adding X11 specifics for this feature is a good idea. KDE is multiplatform, and does not use X11 to work on those platforms. (such as Windows, or OS X or Andriod)

dflemstr, I didn't see that topic, yeah it's duplicate.
Or not. My idea is not create a full app in plasmoid... but that other idea is cool.
So, when will it be ready to test? in kde 4.5?
is it possible using atual kde?

No idea here is guaranteed to be implemented ever, I'm afraid.
