This is mostly a visual change I could see being a very nice thing to at least have as an option. I stumbled across a Gnome Shell concept, take a look at the running Firefox task:

The icon is enlarged bigger than the task bar, then fades off to the right. I think this looks very sleek in comparison to just a small icon!
