Currently non of KDE video players supports one of most basic and mainstay function for media player as external subtitles (and also subtitle downloading from napiproject and opensubtitles).
Im proposing adding external subtitles feature (and also subtitle downloading in future) to KMPlayer, as Mplayer subtitle support is full-featured and mature, and KMPlayer in my opinion is prognostic video player for KDE. But i would be happy if at least Dragon Player would support them.

PS. I know that SMPlayer supports subtitles and much more very good, but only-Qt and not integrated in KDE mediaplayer isnt something of which KDE lover dreams.

Sorry if I'm ignorant, but I haven't used KMPlayer before. Isn't KMPlayer simply a KDE GUI frontend for mplayer? If so, shouldn't it still offer those subtitling features that mplayer has?

Exacly, KMplayer _should_ have subtitles support, but it have not.

Well for subtitles in phonon pray for the day when KDE and phonon get either the existing patch for subtitles into phonon. Or wait till Qt 4.6 gets to everybody and People start integrating subtitles from Phonon.

I've edited the title to clarify, since phonon and kmplayer already have support for embedded subtitled.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but VLC has this and it integrates quite nicely with KDE. Of course, having this feature in a genuinely native player might be even better for some.

Kaffeine (which is a KDE-based player) supports external subtitles (auto-loaded if the subtitle file is called the same as the video file, except for the extension)

Only "problem" might be, for some people, that Kaffeine 1.0 it is not using Phonon, is using (again) Xine directly, due to some Phonon limitations at this time.

There is one more problem: it doesn't render international characters correctly. Such as, to use my language as an example, the Swedish , , and . There is a bug-report on it at b.k.o regarding characters with diacritics in other languages.

Hi buddy! I had the same problem and searched a lot for a way to make dragon player to show subtitles but finally I just found out that I had to use another player. I tested too many players and finally found "Gnome MPlayer" very appropriate, accurate and useful.

leaving aside that this is a 4 year old thread, he explicitly ruled out even smplayer (which is Qt and more capable than gnome mplayer) for not being integrated with KDE enough (where i'm not sure whether this still holds with platform integration of current Qt versions)
