Right now any donations made directly to KDE e.V. are not tax deductible in the US. We Americans love our tax breaks and I would be able to give substantially more money to the KDE project if it was a tax deductible donation.
Setting up a US 501(c)(3) shouldn't be too hard to do. I have set-up many corporations and for this you could set up a private foundation which feeds KDE e.V. I think this would lead to larger and more frequent US-based donations. If you emailed some businesses and individuals who use KDE or a KDE based distribution around tax time letting them know that KDE could use donations and that those donations are tax deductible, I think that a lot more people and businesses here in the US would donate. As a business owner I use openSUSE on all of my business computers, which means I use KDE on all my businesses computers, so I would gladly contribute to the KDE project if it was tax deductible. Right now I donate around $100,000 a year from my company to various charities in the US. I know many other business owners who give away much more than this each year in order to take advantage of the US tax system. If KDE could tap into this large amount of donations made by wealthy individuals and corporations in the US, KDE would have a lot more funding to advance the KDE project. Feel free to contact me for advice on setting up US based corporations as I have many CPA friends who would gladly help out with this. |
