The Device Notifier "Remove Media" button is difficult to find and identify. Users think that there is none, and even when I show it to them they forget where to find it. There was a long thread on this on the usability mailing list:
http://lists.kde.org/?t=127039246200001&r=1&w=2 The problems identified were: 1) The icon does not show unless the user is hovering over the item. 2) The icon is not labelled. 3) There is no "Remove Media" option in the cluttered context menu. The conclusions that had been come to were these: 1) Show the "Remove Media" button icon in the non-hover state to build brand identity with Dolphin's use of this icon. 2) Show the text "Remove Media" or "Eject" or something to that effect in the hover state to clarify what the icon does. 3) Clean up the context menu. Add "Remove Media" and remove the two irrelevant items Unlock Widgets and Device Notifier Settings (both of which should not be on an internal context menu, but rather in their relevant places). This is a mockup made by myself and other members of the mailing list: http://bugsfiles.kde.org/attachment.cgi?id=43312 The upper item shows the proposed hover state, and the lower three items show the non-hover state. Note the use of the word "Eject" is makeshift, I expect that a different word or phrase will likely be used (and localized, there is adequate room for long translations). Thanks.

What about doing the same move for the button that gives you the possibility to just mount the device, that also appears only when hovering ?

Gets my vote also.
Actually, the button does not show anyway in some translations, or with low resolutions or with big font sizes |

I would not like being forced to see "Eject" or "Mount" icons on Dolphin sidepanel or in Device widget. I want that kind function being a optional but by default enabled. So we who do not want it, can disable it separately on both places.
I have always hated the look of Nautilus when you can not hide unwanted partitions/drives and only have a Eject button when hovering over removable. Something must do for the easier ejection. But is should not force to be all the times in the view. Or it should not be happend in mistake. Thats one reason why there never came the eject button right to dolphin, so user would not in mistake click it and eject internal or removable drive. But I have noticed exactly the same thing with Device widget, avarage users does not understand it. They can not find out how to actually eject the device in first time. After few times they will learn it. And my personal opinion is that there was made a mistake when there was added the "unmounted" icon for devices. Now it is almost impossible to recognize is the device mounted or not when there is black/white icons for both. That is one thing what I believe makes it harder for avarage users to understand is the device mounted or not. Without the icon it was very easy to notice as unmounted. With the icon as mounted. Now you almost need to move mouse over the media to see which icon there pop's up. |

@Fri13: I'm intrigued by your last paragraph, because here the two icons are very different and easily recognised. If yours aren't, another factor must be involved. Can you think for a moment about whether the panel size, font size, theme, or something else might be a factor? I've no idea whether any of these things affect it, but if they do it would be useful to identify that.
