Improve Email-Tagging in Kmail

Sat May 08, 2010 12:01 pm
This is the first of three Ideas I would like to propose for the improvement of finding and organization of emails from within Kmail.

The actual email-tagging function works like this (I'm using the German version of Kmail so some of the Names of functions might be different):

Under Settings > Configure Kmail > Appearance (why here?) you find a tab named "Message Tags". There you can edit a list of available tags and corresponding settings. Tagging then works from the "Message" menu at > Mark Message, where you can check the appropriate tags within the menu.

This process is, though fully transparent, awkward and time consuming.

The better way would be to integrate the tagging function into the email-header display where there is still (in general) lots of room to add a button for a popup-menu (which looks like the "Mark Message"-menu and offers the same functionality) and a list of the used tags (which can be truncated in general but expanding on hover). [Update:] The list of available tags should also imply a line to add new tags directly from this menu.

This would facilitate and speed-up a lot he use of tags in Kmail, make it easier to identify and find tagged emails, give nepomuk some more work, and facilitate the organization of emails in Kmail.

Thanks a lot, Jay

I'm not sure it's all that time-consuming as it is. Sure, when setting up your personal tags the first time (probably in Appearance because of the color-coding but I agree, not the most logical place) but other than that it is just a matter of right-clicking in the message and choosing "Mark message" and the appropriate tag.

Personally, I'd consider your idea already existing since the only difference, as far as I can see, is a button in the header vs right-click. Or am I missing something?

Improve Email-Tagging in Kmail

Well ... whether its just a little bit, or a lot faster than having to open a submenu each time you want to tag an email, depends on how many emails and how many projects or threads you have to follow or to organize. For the average home user this might make no difference, but this is not the core group I am thinking about.

And it is not only the menu for tagging, but also the box to display the tags (which makes sense, in contrast to just having symbols in the email-list, doesn't it?) and (as I have just updated - sorry!) a additional line in the menu to quickly add new tags.

And maybe this even makes more sense when reading additionally my propositions for "search-folders" or search for contact-related emails by linking kaddress and kmail.
