Since there will be much free space in the somewhat transparent bar on top it would be good to write image title there too, I think.

Do not try this at home, part 1. Second most favorite command after KDE upgrade: # chmod -x /usr/bin/kactivitymanagerd

I agree with your opinion that these aspects in Digikam should be improved.
What I don't agree with is the design in your mockups. If every application would have its own design KDE would look completely inconsistent and this is not what we want.

What I'd really like to see was a Plasma-based background there :), but I think till we get really Plasma into applications we will have to wait for KDE 5. :(

Nevertheless this gets +1 from me.

I don't think adding Plasma to DigiKam is such a good idea

I agree.

Ive done my own Digikam mockups and I took a different route, making it simpler and looking alot like Dolphin. The transparent bar at the top blocks part of the photo, I ended up moving the "Next/Previous" buttons into the toolbar like Gwenview does. Also the icons on the side have always bothered me and Ive been working on ways to get rid of them.

Here's the link if youd like to see what Im working on

In the first image, I'd opt for a plasma-air themed set of bars instead. First, because white text on a black background contradicts the rest of the Digikam UI, and second, for a consistent look between Digikam UI elements and other elements of KDE. It might even be possible to detect the user's plasma theme and change the bars' appearance accordingly.
