[note that you can find a mockup here : http://kde-look.org/content/show.php?co ... n=77654077]
With "Get Hot New Stuff" (GHNS) interface you can download new content from within an application. You can for example get a list of thumbnails of new wallpapers, download a map for Marble and so on. The new voting feature lets you rate something directly from the dialog box so that others users can see your vote. Unfortunaly, this system has a big disadvantage : you will often rate the content without having it really tryed, e.g., when I download a wallpaper, I want to use it for a few minutes and only then, I can judge if it is a good wallpaper. So if I don't vote right after the download, I must return in the GHNS dialog box, find my wallpaper again and vote for it. Soooo annoying ! If KDE could provide a plasmoid which appears in the systray when I download from GHNS and show me the 4 or 5 last recently downloaded things with the ability to rate them from there, it could certainely boost the voting system. With this "Voting Applet", I can download some wallpapers, a map for Marble, data for Parley, scripted plasmoids..., use them for a few time and then decide, "OK, this is a good Wallpaper..., I will give it 4 stars !". Once you voted, the entry in the popup is deleted. It would be great if one can delete a recent download from there too (not simply delete the entry in the popup but completely unsinstall the wallpaper/plasmoid/map... maybe a little out of the scope of such an applet but it could be great...) I included an application in the mockup (DigiKam). Ubuntu allows you to rate applications from their store but it's the same problem here : I don't want to rate an application that I just downloaded, I want to use it before ! This plasmoid could provide an nice place where distro can integrate the voting feature of their software manager (KPackageKit, Shaman...). One more thing : I'm not sure if this popup menu that I call "applet" from the beginning should really be a standalone plasmoid or if this system could be integrated in the notification area. Maybe the notification area is a better place because I personnaly don't want to always have a Voting plasmoid in my panel, it should be accessible only when I recently downloaded something from GHNS and disappear after a few minutes/hours. What do you think ?
