Digikam - Tagging Panel Mockup

Thu May 20, 2010 2:52 am
Digikam's current tagging panel LOOKS similar to my mockup design but there are some major changes in how I believe it should work. I would like Digikam's tagging to be more like Picasa, where you use the panel to add/remove tags to a file easily. Currently the tagging panel in Digikam is used to filter your images to display the photos that have the tags that are checked, but I believe this is unintuitive.

From PMA Mockups
-When you select some images in Digikam, all of the tags those files include will show up in the top area of the panel and all of the tags in the database not selected for those images will show up in the bottom area.
-The divider separating the top and bottom area is adjustable up and down for easier viewing.
-A text field is added to the top to filter through the tags as you type, or to easily create a new tag. Entering text and hitting "Enter" or pressing the "Add" button will create the new tag for the selected images and add it to the tag database.
-An autocomplete box will show up right below the text field as you enter in text to make it much faster to get the tag that you're looking for.
-Not wanting to get rid of any functionality, you can use the panel to filter image results by tag as well. This is done by clicking on the text of the tag in the panel, instead of the checkbox. The selected tag will then be highlighted and only images including that tag will be shown. Multiple tags are selected and highlighted like a file manager, using Ctrl+Left Click or Shift+Left Click.
-Currently in the mockup the top and bottom areas are sorted by name, but it probably makes more sense to arrange them by tag count instead. This could easily be changed by having a setting in the Menu Options or by right clicking in the panel and adding a "Sort by" dialogue to the context menu.

P.S. Check out my other Picasa web album mockups for more ideas of changes to Digikam's(or any generic Photo Management App's) interface.
