Really miss it from compiz is the ability to mark an area for a quick snapshot, can really speed up cutting images for example.

In compiz there is a plugin for that, don't remember the name.
How it worked in compiz is not really important (for the sake of not anchoring :) ), but if you really would like to know - you press the meta key and draw a rectangle with left mouse button pressed.

I think the best would be to have a button in task bar that you press and can draw a rectangle exactly like in ksnapshot (+ trigger shortcut of course), with ability to move borders (in compiz that part sucked, as you got what you initially drew).
Today you can attach a shortcut to `ksnapshot --region` and it works fine, but it takes time till ksnapshot loads, and that's just it, not additional functionality in the near future.

The reason I want it to be a plasmoid is extensibility, there is a lot can be made with that:
1. saving the shots as thumbs in some kind of menu, just like colopicker plasmoid does, and then saving them one by one instead of saving after each snap.
2. Some people (not me :) ) prefer to use a mouse.
3. Drag and drop from task bar to wherever.
4. More info, like size (would help me a lot actually) immediately visible.
etc.

Another idea this one can be merged into - brainstorm.php#idea39351

Could you provide a bit more detailed description how this works in Compiz

Good idea - in Compiz settings what command (launch application) did you have executed to capture the marked area?

Be nice if there was an option to open the image in the preferred viewer. Maybe left button used to initiate saves or if initiated with right button the image is opened in the viewer.

No, it doesn't really helps, it takes pretty much the same time till it runs, and it of course doesn't provide all the extra features plasmoid could.
Right now I use `ksnapshot --region`.

I think the current idea can be combined with:
brainstorm.php?mode=idea&i=39351#p118798

So by pressing meta key and drawing a box with the mouse you get a popup allowing you to:
- Save a snapshot for this area.
- Zoom to this area.
- Save this area as a video.

If you press meta key + another key (let's say.. W) it works the same way, but you don't need to draw a box in order to select the area, kwin will automatically select the area related to the window that you select.

I think this would really help A LOT.

Hmmm... Sounds very interesting, except for me for example it's really important to be able to change the rectangle after I drew it, other that that it seems like a good idea to combine those. That post is already closed, but I've added to the initial post the link to that one.
