Fairly simple idea, I suppose. Make one centralized Get Hot New Stuff program, with an opening screen containing categories for plasmoids, plasma themes, kwin themes, and so on. It would most likely resemble the layout of the Ubuntu Software Center.
The second part of this wish was originally that KPackageKit be integrated into it as well, but since not all distributions use it, I would like to see these programs be able to act as plugins within the software so that programs such as KPackageKit or Pacman or whatever can be integrated into this same centralized application. Basically, if I'm just getting "stuff," why not put it into one convenient program?

Not all distributions use KPackageKit. I suggest you rephrase your idea into simply a "single GHNS app" and cut out the integration with KPackageKit.

Hopefully I was able to fix my idea. Make it more plugin-based so that KPackageKit can still be plugged into the program, just as easily as Pacman or any other package manager could be. I think it is crucial that the package managers be able to be integrated into this idea.

I like to have a GHNS window in every app. Hope that you don't want to change it.
Actually, when you are goingo to setup a new account on a new computer, a centralized GHNS app for everything could be quite useful: we can just use it to get plasmoids and things that we know we want in our new desktop.

Good point, I don't see this changing where the GHNS windows are. I find it very useful to have a "Get New Wallpapers" button in the wallpaper dialog. I just find it to be an annoyance to have to go to the Window dialog to get a new kwin style and then have to find the Workspace(?) (this one keeps changing) dialog to be able to get a new Plasma theme. If I'm unhappy with the way my system works or looks, just give me a GHNS window to make it easy to change everything at once.

Great idea envalin +1
Why not implementing a sort of language (or script system) to allow automated installation when you download a plasmoid, because, now, the archive file is just downloaded and you have to compile it by hand david

There is already work going on for making it easier to install binaries from opendesktop.org websites, but that is a different issue.

I dont want GHNS integrated to any package manager because GHNS is user oriented system while package manager is whole software system (= all users and applications etc) oriented.
It is nice when there is application own GHNS option, but I wish GHNS would be very modular in the manner that System Settings would include own module for GHNS and it would include own modules for every application what use GHNS somehow. Then make it like a account system. Users could simply backup (Export/import) installed widgets, themes, wallpapers, sounds etc as a list what then could be imported/restored back to new/other computer. User could choose one by one what to import/restore instead just "all or nothing". Think about having a own online backup service/FTP or removable device where user could store list and then later (like after upgrading major KDE SC version) bring all back. |

Nice idea! Siphon addon synchronizer for Mozilla Firefoz is doing exactly something like this: http://siphon-fx.com/ When you install it on firefox, it saves a list of addons on the cloud, and on your firefox installations you can choose wich addons to keep synced, and install or remove them using the buttons in the list. It would be really useful to have such a feature in our KDE Plasma Desktops!
