I would like to be able to ping instantly. key to invoke Kickoff, then I instantly type ping google.com then "enter" and get the job done (opening Konsole, launching the command).
Having to type a keyword beforehand is OK for me (like kon:ping google.com). Inspiration: Gmail's advanced search |

Until something like this becomes possible, you can type "konsole -e ping http://www... " into KRunner/Kickoff/Lancelot |

Currently, if you type "ping http://www... into KRunner, it launches ping (in the background where nobody can hear it scream), and you have to kill it manually.
Perhaps if KRunner (KWin?) could detect that a program is being launched that has output (stdout) but doesn't have a main window? If that's not possible, you could get around that by launching the command in konsole if it is a direct reference to an executable file (as opposed to an application link such as you find in the menu), though with that you would end up launching konsole if you launched the direct executable for any of the graphical programs as well. Of course, a shortcut prefix for konsole would also work (though probably "kns", since "kon" could just as easily be linked to Konqueror, which could also be added as "knq")

konsole -e ping google.com is fine with me
1. stdout is Konsole 2. no need for new shortcut. Just use the program's name. |

And there's the option to check the 'run in terminal window'

Maybe Krunner could be modified to make this a little more usable. Eg run in terminal automaticly if no graphical as airdrik wrote above but maybe just show the output to krunner as the basic maths krunner does.
How about this for any app . . . show stdout to krunner drop down until graphical output detected THEN close krunner as normal |

Now if Krunner didn't need to be clicked on twice.. (if it showed up actually as the bar instead of an icon), and had that checkbox to run in a terminal...
We can always make an enviornment variable that makes kon expand to konsole... so we could just type kon ping google.com as well... But I'm guessing that most people who use krunner will want to run stuff in a konsole, so the check box being on is great... If people want to do both, start applications and applications in terminal windows, they could have two krunners up! one with the checkbox checked, and one not. |

@Rms-Mit
There's no way to know for sure whether an application is graphical or not. @AaronPeterson I don't understand you - what should be shown as a bar? This is what it looks (bar and the option for run in terminal) http://imagebin.ca/view/IEcWob.html |

Sorry, I got confused about a plasmoid that was similar to krunner.. I see that in 4.4 and 4.5 it is not anymore.
I had a plasmoid that let me run a command, it just showed up as an icon, I clicked on it, then I had to cilck in the field, type the command and hit enter. Krunner is not a plasmoid, and it shows up as the text-entry bar... (bar as in address bar) already. I was thinking that there could be two bars, one for command line, and one for graphical, so the user could just select which one they wanted, but there are no reasons to do this in krunner, because a user who would want this could just open two of them, and have each one configured differently. |
