It is not for security purposes. It's to make navigation through the folder tree to be more comfortable.

By clicking the right button on the "Folders Panel" area, currently displayed "Show Hidden Files" option. Another option could be added is "Hide System Folders", showing only the "user" folder and "media/mnt" folder. Something as shown in the image:

Why only have /home and /media? or even more, why have /media? My static external partitions are mounted in /mnt. And.. why do i have to see the whole /home folder, if i'm only going to access to my own files, that is, only my user folder?

I prefer the request i did some time ago, that is, using closest place as root of the tree. Here it is:
brainstorm.php?mode=idea&i=38950

My suggestion is just to have an easy way to hide the system folders, but keeping the full paths and tree structure of the "Folders" panel. /mnt /media /home or any other folder outside the root system structure would be shown. Of course it would be great also to hide any folder of your choice.

Otherwise, if you want only to access user files or partitions without full path estructure, I think more convenient to use "Places" panel to do this.

I'd like to continue maintaining the tree structure and full paths.

I think that Dolphin should use the same folder view as Gwenview has. It is simple, clear, easy to use.

Indeed, it is what I am proposing: use the places as only roots of the tree, but for me I prefer to have only the current one visible (the closest to the current folder) in order to reduce even more the size of the tree (in the end if you want to switch to another place you also have the places panel, so there's no need to have all the subtrees visible at the same time).

Anyway, right there you have an example of how a smaller tree is really helpful.

Why to hide "system folders" for comfortable navagation? Ideally it should be my choice what I want to see and what not. There may be times I will be more interested in system folders, than my stuff.

You may need something like "Working Set" like in eclipse. You should be able to add/remove folders from working set. And a given time you should be able to choose the working set you want to work with.

That is the ideal solution, maybe for advanced users, but the common use case is quite different. People shouldn't have to make such kind of decissions (do i need X folder visible?..).

Common users do not use folders and system files, and having a huge folder tree when you just use your /home and local partitions it becomes really uncomfortable. The "Places" panel and the icon to the left of the "location bar" in Dolphin shows only the locations that I indicate, and clearly is the most common used by the users. Only that this would not have the property of the folder tree navigation. As I said, my suggestion is for an easy way and with no more than two clicks to change from one mode to another.
And yes, I'd also like can choose the locations with which to work, or hide.

@Mamonetti, I think I understand now.

For all, my English is not very good. I do not know if it was clear that my suggestion is to add an option to switch from one mode to another, and not for a permanent change in "Folders" panel.

@Mamonetti, Problem pointed by you can be solved by keeping some predefined working sets. Let a working set "My Stuff" has a rule - "hide system folders". What do you say?

Considering the option for "show hidden files" available in the context menu when you click the second mouse button over the treeview I still prefer my own proposal. Just add another checkbox right there where you choose between showing the whole tree (current behaviour) or you use the closest place as root of the tree.

Simple, easy to enable/disable, and allows the user to improve the access to common files, which should be close to its preferred "places".
Need to change to other place for pasting something? Then click on it (places panel) and the treeview will be updated. Veery useful IMHO and by far the simplest way to deal with this for any user (experienced or not).

The "working set" concept is easy to understand/use for programmers (i am one of them), but considering the relation between cost and benefit I don't think that is the best solution.

Anyway, after more than a year waiting for this it's easy to notice that something might be improved here (i'm not the only one asking for a change). From the user point of view a huge tree is uncomfortable, and this has to be fixed, one way or the other.
