This idea is the creation of a pane that would slide out when users want to quickly show a list of applications, without sorting through the launcher plasmoid, or adding too many apps to their panel.
Essentially, it's a stripped-down launcher plasmoid with only applications using the entire width of the screen. They could still be categorized, and assuming it has the screen space it would try to show all available applications you would find in the launcher. If it doesn't have enough room it might either scale down the icons or have a basic vertical scroll. It would be as tall as necessary except to leave a small percentage of the vertical screen open. It would be accessed by clicking and dragging a task manager towards the centre of the screen. The panel would slide out from the bottom or top edge of the screen (depending on where the task manager is) - check below; Click to Embiggen So if it was on the bottom, you would click and drag upwards, revealing the panel. If you didn't release, dragging back down might dismiss the panel. The actual results in the picture are just quick filler icons without sorting. But this is just the rough idea - it could sort them by category in vertical columns, or it could even just be a list of all applications in the users favourites (becoming a "quick favs" pane). Often used or recently used applications might be increasingly highlighted to make finding them quickly more easily; Just imagine flickin' up an area of your panel and viewing all your apps at once.

I just realized, I'll throw this in there because I couldn't think of a good example;
It would be kind of like the Android tray, with the flick gesture. If this pane could be dragged down, that would seem consistent with the idea.

Excellent idea, and honestly great for touchscreen applications.

Quite simple, add a desktop folder plasmoid pointing to an empty folder, and then create all the shortcuts that you need in this folder.
This is one of my virtual desktops: http://img197.imageshack.us/img197/4420 ... anea48.jpg Good enough? Regards |

No, sorry. Sliding animations out of the taskbar are a bit cooler.

(I wanted to say that so badly you have no idea) @Mamonetti; Anyway, from a functional perspective, (really, really wanted to call out the slidey thing) This will be good for avoiding desktop overload. While a folderview packed with shortcuts technically works, I need to say it made that desktop really cluttered, and it didn't have all the shortcuts either. This is almost an alternative to Kickoff. A one-stop no digging solution for those programs you use once-and-a-while. For the fans of a grid-based app layout without overhauling Kickoff.
