Kickoff Icon View Mockups

These are mockups to show how it could potentially look if an "Icon View" option was added to Kickoff. This would not get rid of the current list view, but provide an alternative icon view if selected in the Application Launcher Settings.

The first mockup shows the "Favorites" tab. In this mockup you can see 16 applications without scrolling, as compared to the current list view that shows only 8 in the same amount of space.

The second mockup shows the Main Applications tab. I separated the categories from the 3 desktop tool applications in order to keep it structured.

The third mockup just shows an added "Icon View" option in the Application Launcher Settings.

Kickoff Icon View Mockups

oops. I forgot to give credit to ArtX who posted this brainstorm.php#idea89527 brainstorm post that gave me this idea. In my proposal though the Favorites tab would be kept and it wouldnt combine the Favorites and Application tabs. Also, my mockups do not show "-" or "+" signs to change the size of the icons.

Kickoff Icon View Mockups

Amazing mockup.
Don't worry I don't need credits, I want only a better menu.
Now that I can see well I think can be good like this. Favorites like this looks nice.
Thanks!!

That would be really really nice, I had to size my kickoff menu so tall to show all my favorites (and I do use them frequently!)
Maybe consider not using a checkbox but a dropdown field like “View mode: Icons / List“

I like the concept, but maybe it makes more sense in icon view to use something more similar to search and launch in the netbook edition? Make it no tabs on the bottom, Favorites on the top row (scrolling right), categories in the middle, and maybe a shutdown and recently used icon mixed in with the categories. The layout of this just looks kinda awkward.

I think thatd make it too cluttered. Maybe as an additional/separate plasmoid you can add to your panel but not as addition/option for the kickoff.

Funny you say that... I think using icons makes it look cluttered in general :) But I agree, that method would have to be another plasmoid.

Aaron said he might do something somewhat similar to this for the plasma education project, but I don't think a final decision has been made.
