Actually KDE is using not very wide range of speed icons near icon representing file. Narrow icon's are great idea(better than menu), but designed only to use most recent/common action.
I think, that this idea can be used in wider range. There was project to use icon bulbs to managing playlist, removing items, etc. This idea was never realized. My proposition is create narrow icon's category, like file managing, media playing, edit files, semantic actions. The last one could allow to fast rank file, comment, etc. In file managing we have only actions like: - Moving item to trash(double clicking could remove it, but in this case dialog should appear) - Compressing/Backup files - Send file to In editing mode we have actions like: - See/Edit property - Open in assignment editor - Scale/convert file(quality looses) Media playing mode: - Play - Add to playlist - Remove from playlist - Pause - Stop Semantic actions: - Rank file - Change comment of file User would change this mode by pressing right mouse key, selecting mode and selecting mode from submenu.

What do you mean by "bulb"?
Man is the lowest-cost, 150-pound, nonlinear, all-purpose computer system which can be mass-produced by unskilled labor.

Bulb is a source of light . In my topic bulb means small icon in icon corner.

I also don't know what a bulb is. Can you please link to a picture that explains your idea?

If I may, I believe he is referring to the icon representing the notifier. At least, the icon in some sets.
