User activity bar (or frame)

Wed Aug 18, 2010 12:08 am
I would like to be able to group certain windows/tasks/programs to be movable together and grouped as I choose - side by side. I'd like to see a bar (or a frame) where I can stick or pin certain frames or programs of my choice. GIMP for instance have several frames/utils by default that have to be moved separately, I'd like to be able to stick them all together in one (or several bars/frames as well as grouping internet tasks side by side (browser/IM-/torrent client). Todays KDE grouping apps/frames is a great feature but sometimes it is nice to have them side by side.
A new user customisable group bar would be a nice feature. This bar or frame could be able to resize the tasks it holds - according to user preferences.

for reference; This feature is similar to the new "tab candy" implemented in Firefox 4b - grouping bookmarks.

tacky illustration to give a vague idea of what I mean - moving/minimizing/closing the bar will do the same to all programs/frames it holds.

I think the kwin scripting will allow this.

I think it would be better implemented as being able to snap windows together and have them behave as a single window. Snapping is implemented, but they don't behave as a single window.

Thank you for the reply and input.
Yes that would more or less suit my 'demand', as long as the user is able to set a master window function to define some or all settings to the slave windows.
E.i the master window or bar scaling would scale all slave windows either as them self or as a group.
I guess there is a technical evaluation process to work with here as well, a first implementation to snap windows side by side would be much appreciated.

Cheers

By the way, the latest development of GIMP shows a single-window mode in progress.

I would add some idea to this. When windows are grouped new virtual desktop or new activity would be made (automatically).

In my opinion, this shouldn't been implemented in application itself.
