It would be nice if there was an option to use no background for the plasma desktop. That way, we could use a custom program to provide a background, like compiz, nautilus, mplayer, or project M.

This would only be possible with compositing.

Yeah, but it would still be nice for those who wanted to do that. If compositing isn't enabled, it'll just show up black underneath, and that's probably desirable for no image.
