Idea for KDE menu, what do you think?
I apologize in advance for spelling errors. If I could, I would do it. The idea is simply to eliminate the traditional menu, replacing it with a sort of OSD of TVs or more advanced Dashboard wholly unrelated to the Desktop. Pressing the button on the menu, you should open a black screen transparent, where all the programs and opportunities add app dashboard page with a lot of favorite search engine, eg.: google. It 'also interesting without controls transparent red window "KDE Brainstorm" site. What do you think? Luca Schembari, Italy

Wait what kind of menus are you talking about?
Just for any KDE application? Because if so, then I would say that this is counter-intuitive. At least the way you put it...

I'm talking about the KDE menu (Kickoff). If we replace the classic menu by clicking the K button opens a separate area is more functional.
Finally, when you click the menu you can only go to make choices for applications, otherwise you can not interact on the desktop. So why not create a separate area where you can better interact with applications? For example, if I install a program I use synaptyc, if it is integrated in this system, it becomes part of a specific area that is currently separated. will be most active programs. Do not you think? I think the future of the menu is not Kickoff, Lancelot, or other ..... I think this is "user space" rather change the name of the menu, call user space application, abandon the historical logic of the classic menus. I hope I have been clear, Luca Schembari, Italy |

It seems that there are some intentions in KDE to move in this (or similar) direction. Of particular note are the fact that the Search and Launch feature of Plasma-Notebook has been moved to its own activity, as well as the intention for activities to be assocated with applications and therefore should be set up with launchers for those applications that you want associated with that activity (which will also automatically associate the application with that activity).
It would seem that your idea could easily be implemented switching the menu button for a button that switches to the Search and Launch activity. The main roadblocks to pushing this forward to the default behavior are that it would take so much effort to set up an activity with those application launchers that you want (as opposed to click once to create an activity and just use the menu and/or application launchers in the activity-independent panel), and that users are just plain used to having the menu available (or other launcher plasmoid which is used to launch any applications) and ignore the ability to associate applications with activities. On that note, it would definitely be helpful to have default activity setups available with associated application launchers (perhaps picked from a particular category from the KDE menu) and a couple of plasmoids useful for that activity (e.g. internet activity + social networking plasmoids; work activity + folder view pointing to user's home directory, a calculator and a file preview plasmoid, etc.). There's also an idea currently in Brainstorm to allow up/downloading such activity definitions to/from KDE-look, which would also help simplify setting up activities. Of course, even with these ideas, in order to get the most bang-for-your-buck users still need to spend some time customizing their activities to their individual workflows, which is something that most users probably aren't going to do.
