Compiz "Animations" for KWin

Sun Oct 03, 2010 3:55 pm
Compiz has a large assortment of animations for the creation and closing of windows, tooltips, modal dialogs, etc. Most of these are missing in Kwin.

Stuff like "magic lamp" is currently in KDE, but other effects like burning windows on close, "beam up", etc. are not available. These are just the fancy effects that are quick enough to be cool, and not disturb you when working normally on your desktop.

Here are the specific animations I am talking about:
- Burn
- Beam up
- Dream
- Magic Lamp
- Vacuum
A full list and useful screenshots is available on the Compiz site: http://wiki.compiz.org/Plugins/Animation

The (short) forum thread leading to this idea is here: viewtopic.php?f=111&t=90637&p=172191#p172191

As envalin wrote, it would be great to be able to have some packages like
plasma-effects
plasma-effects-extra

Additionally, there are several effects that overlap in functionality and/or options and make selecting one and the other kind of ambiguous, but that should be another idea :)

I think it might be better to simply make the animations easier to make and install, possibly through GHNS. I don't see why it wouldn't be possible to use some jquery/javascript animations to animate a closing window. That way we could easily have more than what Compiz has in terms of options, and the users that find certain effects (such as burning windows) particularly tacky (like me :P ) would not have to have them installed on their system.

As I asked in the other thread, please list all of the animations you would like to see. People should not have to visit the compiz website to know what animations you are talking about. Please edit your original post to include a list.

Actually, I didn't quite mean packages, but imagine if the effects option menu looked more like the desktop background menu. You would then be able to download new effects from GHNS, just like plasmoids or background images or Aurorae themes. Screenshots (or maybe even preview animations) would appear just like on the Compiz site you linked to. This way people could easily upload their own animations, and I wouldn't be stuck with a whole "package" of them, when I really only need 1.

I think, we need to implement animations plugins API for Compiz and KWin. Do you think including WebGL and JavaScript is a good solution?

also:

Add support on each plugin for each other, like blur doesn't work with translucency and fade, the effect's bg is not blurred.

I dont like the idea of just spitting around effects. The effects are less supposed to be eyecandy but to help you manage your stuff and programs.
For example this Magic lamp effect helps you to know where your window is going when minimizing it. The blur effect makes you focus on the content rather than the things behind or around it. The darken parent windows effect also accomplishes that you know you have to do something else before coming to that window again.

The glide effect is also supposed to let you know where your window is going when minimizing it. I don't think it'd be a crime to let people choose which one they prefer, or discourage people from making an even more intuitive effect. I think the point is that these would be plugins, available through GHNS, so you wouldn't have to have it on your system if you didn't want it, either.
