Plasma to emulate Android

Mon Oct 18, 2010 8:30 am
There are only around 400 plasmoids on kde-look.org.

But there are tens of thousands of applications on Android market.

If Plasma can emulate Android, all these applications on Android market can be used as plamoids on Desktop, Netbook and Plasma Mobile.

Since Plasma Mobile is almost ready, this feature will make Plasma Mobile ready for use from day 1.

Plasma to emulate Android

Android applications are written in java, which I am not sure plasma currently supports. So there would probably need to be java plasma bindings before this could be implemented. However, it would be a huge boost for meego if it could also run android apps.

iirc android ~= java, there are differences in the api's (more, different?). also wouldn't the Dalvik virtual machine be required to interpret the code? just think it's not that easy

"Canonical is building an Android execution environment that will make it possible for Android applications to run on Ubuntu and potentially other conventional Linux distributions" see http://arstechnica.com/open-source/news ... ubuntu.ars Article is a bit old, no idea what progress has been made or if project is still alive

I'm not saying that all it would take is java bindings, I'm saying that java bindings are a prerequisite before we can even begin thinking about implementing this. Once we had plasma java bindings then a bunch of other stuff would likely need to be implemented on top of that.
