When a notification is display you can click it to open the related application if applicable. For example, I have konversation set to notify me of "pings" in IRC, but it would be more intuitive to click on the notification to open konversation. The same can be said of akregator feed updates and many other cases.

Skype does this with it's notifications as does Steam and a number of other applications (on linux).

An area for improvement could be notifying the application of the event clicked on and having it have the opportunity to react, similar to the action buttons that can be added to a notification, but without requiring the buttons...simply a click action. Konversation could switch to the appropriate channel and akregator could switch the the appropriate feed/article, etc.
